For those of us who are parents or grandparents, do you recall when your child or grandchild was learning to walk as an infant? They were pretty wobbly, weren’t they? And when they fell down, what did we do? We lifted them up and encouraged them to try again. And sometimes to help them walk more firmly, with more stability, do you remember what you did? You’re right – we would hold their hands or arms and help them walk. Maybe we would hold them up all the way across the room as they learned how to balance and how to walk. That’s what a parent does.
Jesus taught us to call God our Father. And just like a Father, God holds us up as we walk, picks us up when we fall, and gives us words of encouragement all along the way. Look at this great promise from Psalm 37.
Psalm 37:23-24 (NLT) –“The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. 24 Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand.”
The Hebrews word in verse 23 that is translated “directs” in the NLT, really in the Hebrew version means to establish, to make steps firm. I don’t know about you, but making my way through this world is sometimes tough – I find myself wobbly and unsteady at times. And there are those times when I fall flat on my face. It is at those times I am so grateful for a God who doesn’t chastise me, or ignore me. Note verse 23 says that God delights in every detail of our lives. And when I stumble, He steadies me. He holds me by the hand.
The very next verse in this section of Psalm 37, is one of my all time favorite verses because, again, it speaks of the loving care of my Heavenly Father.
Psalm 37:25 (NIV) – “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.”
From the beginning steps of the toddler years to the waning days of old age, God can be counted on to always be there, encouraging us, steadying us, and holding us by the hand.
This week, be constantly aware of your heavenly Father who holds you by the hand and makes firm your steps on this journey of life. Remember, God delights in every detail of your life!
